3 weeks post op

Image
Today marks 3 weeks post-surgery. Progress has been slow and gradual, but encouraging. This surgery was much more invasive than the last one and so it is taking me longer to recover, but I am still very positive and still believe this was the right decision considering the pain and discomfort I was in. My range of motion is almost back to being 100%, the ligaments around the knee are still tender from the trauma of the surgery and the incision portals are still sore. I'm not able to kneel on it just yet-which is to be expected. At this stage of rehab it is now about strengthening, which I'm predominantly doing non-weightbearing work to increase quad, glute and calf strength. I think it'll be another 10 days before I attempt any weightbearing exercises, as when I undertake some minor weightbearing work, I can feel the tenderness at the point of resection of the cartilage. Despite this I've done a fair amount of walking over the past week, while in Japan, which the ...

Partial medial meniscectomy

Pre-op. Reassuring arrow Had my much (not) anticipated knee surgery last Friday, today is Day 4 post surgery and I thought it was time for an update. I had my surgery done at BMI Priory Hospital in Edgbaston, under Marcus Green. Mr Green has been my Orthopaedic Surgeon on four occasions now and I trust him completely with my knees and getting be fit and back to running. I had experienced a teat in my left knee almost 10 years ago and he successfully got me back running. That knee is absolutely fantastic and has been very strong since. With my right knee, it is common that if you have had a tear in one knee, you are at a higher risk for having a tear in the other knee. The likelihood is that I just have cartilage that is prone to this type of injury and given a childhood of playing ice hockey and football into my 30s, probably didn't help with their condition before getting into running. That being said, my current tear seemed to develop some time in the past couple of years...

Last run pre-surgery

Image
I had my last run yesterday with this crew, it was an amazing spring day as the sun fought to break through the mist. 4.2 miles, it felt comfortable but even that short distance, my knee was beginning to hurt near the end. However, it gave me positive vibes in the run up to my surgery on Friday. It has been a real struggle not being able to run as I'd like to and without pain. I've visited some dark places since undergoing surgery in November. I was so close to returning before tearing my cartilage again. All signs point to the surgery bring too conservative last time, which left me predisposed to tearing it again. Fingers crossed that this time, the surgery will be successful. Running is so important to me. Not just my physical health but mental health; it is my sanity and release when surrounded by stress and pressure. My knee today has been hurting quite a bit and has underlined the need for this second surgery. I think my run yesterday albeit only 4 miles, was on...

Official Launch of new Running blog

So today, see's the official launch of my new running blog. I say new as my last blog 'Three chickens and a runner' is no longer active for a few reasons, one the chickens have moved on to the chicken run in the sky and two, life caught up with me and I had to have a break from the blog. However, a few years later and trainers back on my feet, I'm all set to go again! Well nearly....I have the small matter of knee surgery to get over, and then the real challenge starts - my rehab and preparation for 2019's big event, the Berlin Marathon in September! So the official launch of the blog coincides to two exciting events today. The arrival of my charity shirt for Get Kids Going ! and also the arrival of my new trainers (Adidas Ultra Boosts)! I will be officially launching my fundraising for Get Kids Going! in another blog post on March 1st, so look out for that! Get Kids Going! Berlin marathon 2019 My new Adidas Ultra Boosts
